One of my favorite live music venues, not only in Austin, but quite possibly anywhere in the world, Antone’s, is celebrating its 37th Anniversary throughout the month of July here in 2012.
Proudly known as Austin’s “Home of the Blues,” legendary local promoter, Clifford Antone, first opened the doors of his prized property, then located on Sixth Street (the ONLY club on Sixth, at the time) the evening of July 15, 1975 with a performance from the one and only, Clifton Chenier.
Now located at the corner of Fifth and Lavaca Streets, the live music mecca has helped jumpstart the careers of both Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Los Lonely Boys, Ian Moore, and Bob Schneider, among others. Not to mention, the venue has hosted an unbelievable list of blues icons over the years, as well, including Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Pinetop Perkins and James Cotton.
Among the main reasons that our city has garnered the reputation as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” Antone’s has gained an incredible reputation as one of the nation’s top live music destinations, having won countless awards, while also booking a diverse roster of musicians over the past 37 years that, according to their web site, has featured Bono & The Edge of U2, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Eric Clapton, Dwight Yoakam, Bruce Willis and Elvis Costello.
Throughout July 2012, Antone’s calendar is stocked full of amazing artists playing the famous stage in celebration of, not only the blues club, itself, but also out of respect for its founder, Clifford Antone, who, unfortunately passed away in May of 2006. Currently owned by Clifford’s sister, Susan Antone, the venue will get the 37th Anniversary Celebration rollin’ with a Kickoff Party on July 11th with performances from Doyal Bramhall II, Marcia Ball, Malford Milligan, Mike Flanigin and many more, all dedicated to both Doyal Bramhall and Hubert Sumlin, both who have passed away over the past months.
Also scheduled to appear at Antone’s during July – all of whom I recommend catching – are Mother Falcon (7/13), The Derailers (7/15), Kelly Willis & Bruce Robison (7/17), Hubert Sumlin Tribute Night (7/18), Jimmie Vaughan (7/20), Joe King Carrasco & The Original Crowns (7/21) and the great Bob Schneider (7/26). More information can be found on the Antone’s web site listed below.
Come on out and help celebrate Austin’s “Home of the Blues” here in July!
