July 2012 and we’re in the midst of another excellent Summer. If you find yourself with a unsatiable desire to get away from the everyday, there’s no better time than now to pack’er up and hit the open road. That said, if you’re in the mood for great live music at a super cool inaugural event out in West Texas surrounding by stunning scenery and landscapes, Viva Big Bend is just for you!
Starting tomorrow and running throughout this coming weekend in the amazing small towns of Marfa and Alpine, TX, Stewart Ramser of Texas Music Magazine fame, and his staff, are producing the 1st Annual “Viva Big Bend” music festival and music-industry showcase. The event is hailed as a true celebration of the many different aspects that make Texas such a unique state: extraordinary natural beauty, talented people and a diverse culture.
A stellar music lineup of over 50 artists will perform among at least nine different venues in both Marfa and Alpine (roughly 26 miles – and beautiful drive – apart) over the four days of the event. Scheduled to perform include Bob Schneider, Dale Watson, Doug Moreland, Guy Forsyth, Josh Abbott Band, Texas Tornados, Sons of Fathers, Terri Hendrix with Lloyd Maines, Mike & The Moonpies, Matt The Electrician and many more. Venues include the Holland Hotel, Railroad Blues and Granada Theatre in Alpine and Planet Marfa and Padre’s, just up the road in Marfa. Excellent opportunity to take in some tremendous talent and brilliant live tunes!
Presented by Western Spirits Beverage Company, Sam Houston Whiskey, Whitetail Whiskey, Bird Dog Blackberry Flavored Whiskey and Tres Leches, Viva Big Bend will also include events planned specifically for music-industry representatives throughout the festival.
Having just returned from West Texas, a road trip through Marfa, Alpine, Fort Davis and Big Bend National Park, I cannot begin to tell how amazed I was with, not only the spectacular beauty of the area, but the unique flavor to these small Texas towns and the overly gracious reception from the locals. I only wish I had more time and better availability to make it back out this coming weekend.
I will also say, if you can get out that way and do find yourself out in Marfa, either this weekend, or anytime in the future, you MUST stay at El Cosmico, the creation of Liz Lambert, well-known here in Austin for her outstanding properties, Hotel San Jose and Hotel Saint Cecilia, along with Hotel Havana down in San Antonio. Creatively cool, very unique, out-of-the-ordinary, and just plain fun! (And, if you’re wondering…yes, it’s true, you can opt to stay in a “luxury teepee” at El Cosmico).
Needless to say, if you have the chance, please hit the road and head on out to support this great inaugural effort this weekend. Cheers to Stewart and his staff and VIVA BIG BEND!
