So, now that I’ve gotten your attention, let me just say that one of my favorite aspects of days spent here in Austin, Texas are those where I stumble upon brilliant new finds and unexpected gems. Well, that happened late last week when I made a long-overdue journey down South Congress to the food trailer known as Ms. P’s Electric Cock.
Hard to miss with the striking neon sign above the shiny Airstream proudly touting “CHICKEN,” located just south of Doc’s Motorworks, Storyville and Parts & Labour on SoCo, Ms. P’s is a killer destination for the finest guilty pleasures in the food realm.
Enthusiastically greeted upon arrival by owner, Perry Ray, aka, “Ms. P,” I dove in to the culinary adventure with a 3-piece order of the highly touted fried chicken, made from the recipe of Ms. P’s grandmother, along with a side of the Mac N’ Cheese, which was impossible to turn down, due to the mention of seasoned bread crumbles and truffle drizzle. Toss in a bottled root beer from Barton Springs Soda Company, along with the kind offering of a complimentary waffle dusted with powdered sugar and maple syrup to finish, and I was on a fast track for a “food coma” and need for nap following this gluttonous outing.
As for the fried chicken – served “spicy and juicy” with Ms. P’s “electric love” – along with a roll and jalapenos (another great touch), the best part is how Ms. P prepares the bird…with a “Texas two-step” brining process, fresh herbs and 12 spices, then the finishing touch by frying the chicken in top quality peanut oil. Best of all, Ms. P only serves FRESH, never frozen, no hormones, no additives and, even better, LOCAL free range chicken. The end result is among the most flavorful, moist, crispy, fried chicken that I’ve come across, certainly among the very best here in Austin.
In addition to the 3-piece, Ms. P also offers the fried chicken goodness in 2-piece, 8-piece and 12-piece quantities, along with other excellent side items ranging from the “Farm Frites,” rock solid fries with thyme and pepper, “SoCo Slaw” and “Dirty Black Eyes,” slow cooked with smoked ham hocks, uncured pepper bacon and fresh herbs. Chicken and Waffles, a juicy chicken tenderloin and a stellar selection of breakfast tacos are other exceptional highlights available (and that I definitely recommend) at Ms. P’s.
To be honest, pretty much everything I tried during my initial visit to my new favorite on South Congress was top notch. In fact, so much so, that I had to return a few days later for more – this time the 12-piece fried chicken “big daddy,” along with, naturally, more Mac N’ Cheese, to share with friends and family, who were in total agreement, that this is really great stuff.
So, if you’re craving a style of chicken that will, quite simply, rock your world and could alter your life as you currently know it, I’d head on down to SoCo, tell Ms. P that I sent ya and enjoy all the goodness that the “Electric Cock” can offer. Enjoy, y’all!
